MARKETING YOUR BOOK ON A tight BUDGET IS ALMOST HERE!

It's that time again! Now in its 7th year, (wow) I am really itching to share some new ideas with you!

I've been asked what sort of budget this book focuses on, and it finally occurred to me that the word 'budget' means different things to different people, so this year's update includes a special word that will help you from here on out to know what I mean! (I guess the dollar bill cover was too subtle!)

Plan on seeing the newest edition in January, more than likely in that first week!

Can't wait?
You can still get the 2017 edition

Highlights of the Write Here in Ephraim Conference

For those of you who missed out on the Write Here in Ephraim Conference, you really missed out!

Some great classes were presented, some great prizes given out; we even had a terrific bookstore!

Here are just a few of the insights I gleaned:

From Chas Hathaway:

Be true to your life instead of working so hard.
Have the courage to express your feelings.
Stay in touch with friends.
Let yourself be happier.

Do you crave chocolate? Well, craving ANYTHING is a choice. Choose not to crave and you will be living in God's grace, His enabling power to move you forward.

From Dene Lowe:

Do you have to print your picture book? Consider apps on your phone or tablet that tells the story. Offer a book with a game.

I am going to check out the option of Sheridan Press; I currently use CreateSpace for my printing needs.

Set up a writer's retreat.

Consider sending one chapter a week to your online readers if they subscribe. If you get enough subscriptions, you will be able to publish your book in hardback.

I am also checking out Project Gutenberg. They offer FREE classic eBooks.

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE:

I will be speaking at the League of Utah Writer's Conference in September. Check back to learn more about this conference!

I'm All for More Reviews!!

Getting sick of it yet?

All those reviews that keep coming your way?

You may be sick of me telling you about them, but I'm happy to report I'm at 25 for Marketing Your Book on a Budget! If you haven't read a single solitary one of my reviews yet, here's yet another plug to do so.

And if you haven't purchased my book yet, well...

That being said, I have learned some important stuff when it comes to improving my book for the 2014 version. Some have been baffled because my chapters are so short. Others have wondered where my marketing plan is in all of this fun information.

Can I be honest?

I really didn't have a marketing plan.

Now, before you click me off right here and now, allow me to explain. Marketing Your Book on a Budget came about as I tried new ideas and re-experienced old ones. I didn't have a marketing plan because I had no idea how to set one up. I read some stuff on how to do it, of course, but everything was so heavy I didn't want to begin.

So, during the course of getting my newest reviews the last week or so, I came to realize something. I now had a marketing plan! It was created through my experiences of the last 2 years and will be a part of Marketing Your Book on a Budget 2014.

Now, don't get scared. This marketing plan will be the simplest, least draining plan you will have ever seen. You will still have time to write and go out to eat and spend time with your family.

You want a hint?

Well, okay. Put book reviews at the top of your list. Follow book reviews with social networking.
I have seen the greatest personal success within these two areas alone.

Want more?

You'll just have to read the book.

Going Steady With Your Books

Okay, so the book I'm reading right now, Memory Lake, is really bringing stuff up from my past. And let's just say that I'm thinking more about marketing and how much it really means in the success of my books.

I'd like to think that everyone will pick up Marketing Your Book on a Budget, but I know that's not being realistic. What's more realistic, is the thought that I continue to do all I can to get it out there, and those who are interested will purchase it or borrow it from a writer friend.

You're heard it before, but the words bear repeating: It's important that you know your audience. After that, it's all about marketing your book to those in your audience. It's as simple as that.

Yes, marketing takes a lot of time. But it is also worth it. I have seen results in the forms of new connections, more money, and even (dare I say it) more opportunities to review books and write guest posts, and do more interviews.

What is specifically happening may not surprise you, but it did me.

The more I've gotten out there, unafraid to share my work (no matter the positive and not so positive reviews I've received) the better I do.

I do online stuff like blog writing.
Old-fashioned marketing stuff like book signings.
Even stuff unheard of for most people, like selling books at a hair salon.

Photo by: ahhyeah, courtesy of Flickr
And it all works. Some better than others, but it all works.

If I sat in a room all day with my books boxed and never told anyone about them, now, that would be a tragedy. Selling only two books at a signing?

Nope.

Because I sold 2 books!

Going steady with your book is better than going steady with that boy in high school, BECAUSE your books will never leave you! You can do whatever it takes (maybe even make a few mistakes), and the name, published author, will always be yours!

Always!

Enough said.

Marketing to Your Audience

I occurs to me today that I haven't yet discussed marketing to a specific audience. You need to know first hand from me, that I've been known to market to the entire gamut at one time, and haven't until recently, really started to think about marketing to my audience and what that would mean.

So allow me an example:

When I published Marketing Your Book on a Budget 2013, I wanted writers to see it. I knew that readers who weren't writers probably wouldn't care, but that most writers would. So how to get them to see what I had to offer?

One of the first things I did was to post the news on my blog. Most of my readers are writers, so I wanted the news to go first to them. Recently I've read that you will have greater success with readers if you have only one blog, rather than many that relate to each of your books, for example. Keep everything tidy and in one location, where readers can learn all about you.

Second, I focused on getting the word out on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. I'm aware that these posts went out to everyone, whether they were a writer or not, but this is a difficult one to narrow down, so in my efforts to share with all of my friends, I'm sure that some of my writer friends got the message.

Third, I actually posted a link to my book on my many writer related social media sites. I got many comments and some purchases from sharing the direct link to Amazon, and one not so good response. But all in all, writers appreciated that I let them know about my book.

Consider the theme of your book and get involved in social media groups that focus on your particular topic.

Fourth, I have been focusing on going to places where writer's spend their time. Classes and writing conferences are a great place for me because there are plenty of writers their interested in marketing their next book.

What if you have a book on gardening? Or cooking? These are easy. But what if you've written a  book about aliens? Do some deep thinking. If I'd just written a book about aliens, I'd consider planetariums, sky watching parties, stores that sell 'outer worldly' stuff.

Fifth, I usually put out emails to my family and friends and tell them about my new book. I also invite them to a book signing at my home. I didn't do it this time for obvious reasons.

Family and friends typically will buy anything you write; they like to support you in your endeavors and love the fact that they know a published writer personally.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Blog. Blog. Blog.
2. Share. Share. Share.
3. Link. Link. Link.
4. Go places. Go places. Go places.
5. Friends & Family. Friends & Family. Friends & Family.

Do you have a new book? How are you getting it out to your audience?

Let me know here!

Reviews are Priceless

For any of you authors who don't believe that you can get reviews on your books, or feel as if the time and travail you put in is really not worth the effort, allow me to try and change your mind. I received this review today and have no idea who it is. What made it even more worthwhile than the 5 starts I received is that the person purchased the book and then did a review for me.

Good, quick beginner's guide

By

Bull Frog "author" (Pensacola FL)

Amazon Verified Purchase

This book has good, beginning advice for the self-published author about how to promote a book. It is well written and knowledgeable.

Writers, we all know how long it takes to gather our own set of reviewers, but when other readers, and in this case other writers, make the time to review our book(s) that's when the review is especially priceless.

And so I want to thank Bull Frog who has written books as well, though I couldn't find them listed on Amazon.

If you're not a famous author yet (like I'm not) and feel as if you're not reaching enough people or selling enough books, consider continuing with reviews, yes, even if your book is a year old or older, you've just about given up on it, or you're working on a new project.

Keep the reviews going and you'll find that people will see them.

And while I don't know how Bull Frog found my book, I'm grateful for the review.

Thank you!

Marketing Your Book on a Budget--Day 2

Previous to today, I'd put together a fun video--thank heavens for doing things ahead of time--here it is, and I hope you enjoy!

Marketing Your Book With Less Stress

I don't know about you, but the idea of talking about my books to a crowd gets my heart pumping without even going there.

Still, I don't think a writer has to live in stress when marketing his/her book.

Take it from me, you really learn as you go, and expecting less than perfection is a good rule to follow.

When I began marketing my first book over 10 years ago I had no idea what to do. I went with a local publishing company but was expected to market my stuff at the drop of a hat. I did some research, and spent some time doing school presentations and book signings, but I really didn't understand, nor did I know what was possible when it came to marketing.

Official Release date: March 21
But for the last few years I've been learning. And let me just say that there is so much more to do now than there was then; and so many more opportunities for writers!

I mention many of these opportunities in my book that will be re-released on March 21. I talk about:

Blog reviews
Interviews
Blogs, writing your own and guest blogging for others
Social Media
The importance of word of mouth
Speaking engagements
Free advertising
Book Signings (that are fun and worthwhile)
Contests
Postcard promotion

All of these I have implemented myself. I have tried these things. There is nothing in my book that I haven't tried and found to be successful, so I only include those things. And let me just tell you, I even have an easier time getting organized (less stress) because I actually have a book with everything together! Before that, I had papers all over the place, and I couldn't find anything!

Imagine that.

I am using the book right now as I put together this blog post, and you can use it, too, when you get out there marketing your book.

Two days to go!

Marketing Your Book on a Budget

This is my last day of heavy book promotion for my new book, Scrambled, and I thank everyone for sticking with me. As a thank you I am offering my short Kindle book, "Marketing Your Book on a Budget," for .99 cents.

Yes, this is the standard price, and a really great one I might add. In it you'll find resources for getting book reviews, gaining interviews, getting free advertising and more. It's a short read with links to many of the places I've gone for book promotion and the many great people who have a desire to help budding as well as established authors for FREE.

Remember, much of what you do as an author to promote your work does not have to cost you a penny. Yes, it will cost you some time and some growing experience, but everything in Marketing Your Book on a Budget is either free or very low cost.

Because I am an author too, I realize that authors (as a general rule) need all the help they can get with the funds needed to promote their work, and I can't see paying for something that is generously given out by someone else because he/she cares about writers and their success.

Keep in mind that once you purchase this handy pamplet, you'll want to be on the list for future FREE YEARLY updates. Just follow the instructions at the end of the book.

I thank everyone who has and who continues to be generous with me!

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

Love,

Kathryn

New Pamplet on Book Marketing

Hello again,

With all of the hoopla with my new book Scrambled, I forgot
to mention that I have just published a handy pamplet entitled,
"Marketing Your book on a Budget."

How does an author best get book reviews? What of interviews, blogs and social media? How can a new author expect to be seen while crowding the lane with other authors of his/her genre?

Marketing Your Book on a Budget is tiny for a reason; any author can afford it. But be prepared for the endless information enclosed. You'll never wonder again about the best ways to speak up about your book, get free advertising, or learn why postcards can help you get the word out faster and easier than any other way.

Plus, once you have downloaded the Kindle version, expect yearly updates for FREE. Just contact us to register via the email at the end of the book. Never be in the dark again when it comes to marketing your book. See what little or no money will really attract!
