AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Nestor Eguez

1.     Tell me a about yourself. What got you started in writing?

I’m an electronic engineer  who immigrated with my family from Uruguay, South America to California, twenty two years ago in search of a better life. Since then, I have been teaching at Adult and Vocational schools. I had always an interest in writing and one day 10 years ago while helping my kids with a school project, was the moment that my first story born.

2.  How do you schedule your writing time? When do you write?

Usually during the weekends, because I teach from Monday to Friday.

3.  How and where do you write? Do you prefer a lap top or some other method of getting your words down?

I use my lap top, but I prefer write on my desktop. I have a good view and I can listen music.

4.  What's your favorite part about writing? Your least favorite part about writing?

Well, writing is my true passion. I love the whole thing, and I can’t find something that I don’t like about it. Maybe, the editing process, because I don’t participate and at the end is going to be changes to do later.

5.  How did you come up with your book idea? How long did it take you to write your book?

Took me more than ten years. I'm a technology teacher, and writing wasn't a priority in my life. Was more like an item in my bucket list. But one day helping my kids with a school project, this story came to me in a very special way. After that, a lot of things happened, good and bad, but I never gave up. Of course, in the developing of the story it changed a lot, but I kept the basic original structure.

6.  What types of marketing do you do to promote your writing?

On line : FaceBook and Twitter.

7.  What are you currently working on? Do you have a new book out?

Yeah, I’m finishing the second Vol. of  Kalima’s collection. Hopefully will be out around April.

8.  Do you have a project on the back burner? Tell me about it.

There are a couple of Non-fiction stories. Of course there are going to take some time researching, and for that is something that will see the light in a couple of years.

9.  What would you tell a beginning writer who wants to publish but doesn't believe he/she has enough talent?

     Tell me a about yourself. What got you started in writing?

I have always written, from a very young age, my imagination always got the best of me. Years later, as a Sunday school teacher to kindergarten children and a mother of a young boy, I was on a mission to create fun characters to empower the children in my life and to grab their attention.

How do you schedule your writing time? When do you write?

I do not have a fixed schedule – nor do I have a preferred time of day. The idea takes hold in my mind over many days, sometimes weeks and then the floodgates open and I can write for many hours on end.

     How and where do you write? Do you prefer a lap top or some other method of getting your words down?

Always a laptop - I can’t read my own handwriting!

What's your favorite part about writing? Your least favorite part about writing?

Every facet of writing is exhilarating as it painful - the creative process is my favorite - least favorite part about writing is rehashing my sentences over and over - I suffer from perfectionism.

     How did you come up with your book idea? How long did it take you to write your book?

My son adores super heroes and I toyed with the idea of a Christian super hero for many years until I had a sudden realization about the true meaning of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and how they are, in essence, super powers. Once the idea took hold and the interpretation of the concept was completed, it took a day to write the book (please note that children stories are less than 1000 words) and then months or refining and tuning the original manuscript.

Content marketing via my blog/website www.mireillemishriky.com, social media, word of mouth. Marketing is actually a full time job and my biggest challenge.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW: Felicity Augustina Sparrow

Tell me a little about yourself (where you live, who you are, what you look like, what you hope to achieve, etc.)

Hi, there! My name is Felicity Augustina Sparrow.  I live in a hollow part in a tree.  I am a Passeridae. I read that word in a big book that my friend Mister Yellow Horse has. He says it’s called an, um, En-cyclone-pedia. Or something like that. Anyway, Passeridae is a fancy word that means Sparrow. That’s what I am!  I am brown with dark brown stripes.  I have wings, and a tail, and um, feathers.  I’m about the size of, um, other sparrows.  Let’s see, what do I want to achieve? Oh, I know! I would like to read more books, and learn how to use a come-putter better.  I also want to be able to talk to nice featherless two-foots. Mister Yellow Horse says I just sound like chirps and stuff when I try to talk. So it’s lucky I can write stuff, because he can read what I say. Oh, and featherless two-foot is the bird-word for persons.

What do you like to do in your spare time? 

Reeead!  I love to read books, and more books! 

What is your favorite color and why? 

Um, I guess that might be green, because that’s what I see all the time.  Or maybe it’s black!  Because beetles are black! And beetles are delicious.

What is your favorite food? Why is it your favorite?  

Beetles!  Beetles, beetles, beetles!  They are the best! Especially when they’re fresh and kicking!  And I love the guts the best, oh, yum!

What would you say is your biggest quirk?  

Hmm. Maybe I talk too much. But Cairn talks way more than I do. (He’s another pal of mine, and he’s also a sparrow.)

What is it about your antagonist that irks you the most, and why? Share a line in the book where this irk is manifested. 

Well, there’s Grak, and there’s Davy. I guess I’ll pick Grak. He’s a hawk, and the biggest thing that annoys me about him, is that he wants to EAT ME!  I don’t like that at all, no way.  Plus, he is really good at writing confusing riddles. I had to figure out a bunch one time.  It was so annoying.  And scary. Also, he kidnapped Colin’s mom Queen Lilia. She’s a fairy.  And so is Colin.  And I still don’t know why he would do that, other than Grak’s just a jerk. Maybe I’ll ask him some time.  What the heck was I saying? Grak wants to EAT ME!  (Well, still, I’m curious.) Oh, and here’s an example of one of his riddles from the book:

If you wish to enter, my name then you must speak.

I’m in the deepest cavern, I’m at the highest peak.

I’m very large. I’m very small. I’m flat I’m sharp I’m round.

If you wish to find me, just take a look around.

If you haven’t guessed my name, one more thing you must know.

As I grow old and older still, the smaller then I grow.

See what I mean about the riddles? So confusing!

What or who means the most to you in your life? What, if anything, would you do to keep him/her/it in your life?  

Well, let’s see.  I’ve got a bunch of friends.  There’s Mister Yellow Horse.  He’s a nice featherless two-foot, and there’s Cairn Constantine Sparrow. He’s my pal. And he's really good at math. But my best friend in the whole wide world, is probably Colin.  He’s a fairy.  And he lives in the Wildwood.  He and his parents made me an honorary fairy, and I would do anything to help them, and keep them from getting found by crazy featherless two-foots. Because that would be bad. I also love the Wildwood, because it is nature, and I want it treated nicely.

What one thing would you like readers to know about you that may not be spelled out in the book in which you inhabit?

I like featherless two-foots who treat the Wildwood nicely, and pick up their garbage, and don’t start fires, or take things that aren’t theirs. I like them a lot!

If you could tell your writer (creator) anything about yourself that might turn the direction of the plot, what would it be? 

I want to ask Grak (remember that mean hawk who wants to EAT ME?) why he kidnapped Queen Lilia in the first place, because I don’t know.  But it’s scary, because he wants to EAT ME!

Ask me any question. I've always wanted to know what a character thinks about writers like myself. I'll answer the question at the end of this interview.

Okay. What exactly is an inter-net? I used to think it was like other nets (I'm not a fan of nets) but now, I don’t think it is. I know you can use it on a come-putter because Mister Yellow Horse says he can send letters to his family with an inter-net. But what is it, exactly? (Oh, and the answer to the riddle, is A Rock!)

Felicity, great question and pretty technical too if you ask me. But since you asked me, let's just say it's too hard to explain. Just know that it works, sort of like a telephone works and a television works. I'm glad all I have to do most of the time is turn the computer on and everything works the way I want it to.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW: Charlie from Charlie the Horse

Tell me a little about yourself (where you live, who you are, what you look like, what you hope to achieve, etc.)

Hello, Kathryn. I’m so excited to be in the spotlight with you today. My name is Charlie the Horse. I live at Sweetbrier Racing Stable in Kentucky.  I came here for training when I was about one and a half years old. There are many famous racehorses in my family.  My Mom and Dad were both pretty well-known. Their names are Star Quality and Charles the Great. I probably look a bit more like my Dad because we each have a crooked white blaze on our face and four beautiful white stockings. I’m tall—about 16.2 hands. If you’re not sure how tall that is, it would be 66 inches at my withers. That’s the highest part of my back.

I’d like to win the Southern  Derby. That’s a big dream of mine. That’s my goal for now. I told a story about my life so far. My friend, Deanie, helped me write it. I hope children like my story. They’ll learn about my training and my thoughts about it.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love relaxing in the fields and nibbling on the grass there. Sometimes my friends, Buddy and Glory, play games in the fields. We like to have pretend races. Oh, and I like to eat. When you’re a growing racehorse like me, you work up a big appetite.

What is your favorite food? Why is it your favorite?

Hay and oats are yummy. Oats would probably be my favorite, especially if there are carrots on top.

What is your favorite color and why?

Oh, that’s a hard question. I think it would be red because if I win the Southern Derby, they’ll put red roses on in front of the saddle.

What would you say is your biggest quirk?

Hmm, at first I had trouble concentrating on my work. I’m fond of eating flowers that grow along the racetrack when I’m working. I get into trouble for that. I have to remind myself to concentrate.

What is it about your antagonist that irks you the most, and why? Share a line in the book where this irk is manifested.

When I’m racing, I want to win, but so does every  other horse. Sometimes the others try to keep me from winning. Here’s something that happened in my first big race:

''Suddenly Buddy bolted to the side; bumping Charlie and making him lose his balance for a second.''

I can’t tell you what happened after that because it would spoil the surprise.

What or who means the most to you in your life? What, if anything, would you do to keep him/her/it in your life?

My trainer, Misty, is important because she makes lots of decisions. She decides what to teach me and which races I might enter. Then she talks to my owner, Mr. Morton, to make sure he agrees with her plan. My exercise girl, Kerry, is very special as well. She gives me workouts when I’m not racing. I can’t leave out my jockey, Joe, because he rides me in races. One important horse in my life is General Quick. He gave me a lot of good advice.  I use my best behavior so none of these people send me to a new stable.

What one thing would you like readers to know about you that may not be spelled out in the book in which you inhabit?

I want readers to know it’s okay to have big dreams. It’s important to work hard if you want them to come true.

If you could tell your writer (creator) anything about yourself that might turn the direction of the plot, what would it be?

In the beginning, I didn’t know how important it was to work hard and set goals. If I didn’t learn that, I’m not sure what I would have done with my life. I might still be practicing eating the flowers.

Do you think writers should always have a message to their stories? I’d love to know that.

As for your question, I do believe in leaving a message, even if the message is subtle. When a reader finishes a book, they need to be glad they've spent the time reading it. Of course, a book can be fun, but there has to be a take away value - whether that's, be nice to horses, be nice to your owner, or never buck a jockey off.
