Why Doesn't Book Marketing Work for Me?

I get it.

Why?

Because I am there myself.

I have tried the typical ways. Free books. Discounted books. Book signings. I have tried out-of-the-box ideas. Craft fairs. Hair salons. Book release parties from home.

Are your books just hanging around your house?

Photo by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

What I have found?

Book marketing doesn't always work out in the way I expect it to.

Sometimes I sell quite a few books. Other times I sell few to none.

Perhaps it's the current genre I write. Perhaps it's COVID that's keeping people away. Perhaps there's just too much competition.

When I get stuck on why book marketing doesn't work for me, I get stuck in other areas too. I get stuck finding new ideas to write about. I get stuck finishing what I've begun. I begin to spend my time doing other things that bring the results I want.

After all of the complaining about marketing and why it doesn't work for me when it is obvious it works for "her" or "him" I take a deep breath and try again.

I am a firm believer in moving forward even when it hurts. When the sales aren't what I expect. When I feel as if my marketing efforts have meant nothing and maybe I should hire someone.

Or not.

Smile.

It's that time again to get out of my pity party and open my eyes to the options.

How about you?

Marketing Your Book Using a Slogan?

"Have you ever felt like one of the least of these?"

"Enlightened?"

I have used each of these slogans to market my books "I Walked With Jesus" and "Enlightened" but, unfortunately, I haven't used them regularly when it comes to social media.

I have put my slogans on postcards to hand out
when readers ask about my book.
Not only is the slogan here but contact information.

Readers like the connection with a book, something they'll remember. If they can't remember the title, they can at least remember the question you posted or the slogan that made them think. Great book marketing extends beyond the typical description of your book. A memorable slogan is like returning to a taster's table for the treat that really hit your taste buds the first time.

"Enlightened" not only has a slogan on the back
but an additional insight on the front -
sort of a bullet list of what to expect inside

While a great tagline or slogan may not sell thousands of copies of your book [many authors do not have taglines and sell plenty of copies] your readers and potential readers will get a sense of who you are as an author and what you write by the taglines you use to market your books.

Businesses use slogans all of the time.

"Just Do It" is one example.

You may have heard these bookstore slogans:

A Bookworm's Paradise

A Novel Idea

For Booklovers

What you may have heard less of is an author using their own book slogan.

I have used a slogan for book signings. It's posted on a chalkboard easel.

"Written a book?"

I love questions for slogans because it causes the reader to ask themselves the question being posed.

Are you interested in gaining more interest in your book?

A slogan doesn't tell a reader what your book is about, it communicates emotion. It gives the potential reader an opportunity to look inside themself for an answer. Great slogans do more than connect two parties. They help readers to see what they'll be getting if they read your book.

When I think of the movie Shrek and the slogan, "Ogres are like onions!" I am reminded of all the layers involved in people of the less than green sort. There are many layers to individuals and many ways to reach them. To connect. To help them understand who we are and what we do. But mostly, to see themselves.

Market your book using a slogan? What do you think?

Photo by Paige Cody on Unsplash

Book marketing. Whether you're an established author or not, you are learning or have first-hand knowledge that it takes time to find the best sites for book marketing. Great news! Here are five blogs with substantial lists for your perusal. [Pay special attention to #3].

1) Be Writ. Brit says she is "helps creatives by day" and writes "novels in [her] head the rest of the time.""20 Writing Blogs That Accept Guest Posts" is a must-read.

2) Faith Blum has a great site with hundreds of ideas for writers. My favorite? "Promo Sites" from free advertising to paid.

3) A phenomenal article about how best to get a reader's attention. "How to Get a Reader's Attention by Shocking Broca" by Thomas Umstattd Jr. Read or listen to the Podcast.

4) A fantastic site from Jane Friedman. My favorite article? "4 Ways to Immediately Improve Your Book Marketing Efforts." Want to know how best to find book reviewers? You'll want to read this article.

5) Last, but surely not least, take a visit to Author Unlimited. My favorite place? "50 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Promote Your Book." Want some outside-the-box ideas along with ideas you may have already heard of but have procrastinated in trying? You'll want to make a visit.

Happy Marketing!

My Favorite Marketing Tool

Do you have a favorite marketing tool?

Is it book signings at your home?

Social media with all of its highs and lows?

Or is it that you love radio interviews or blog interviews?

Do you find that you love giving your book away on Amazon for a few short FREE days and to see your book rise to the top?

Like you, I enjoy all of these things, but, frankly, the best marketing tool I own takes little to no planning. In fact, this marketing tool walks with me every day, waiting for just the right moment to speak up and share.

You've got it, my favorite marketing tool is my voice.

Why is that?

I don't think I'm any different from you. In fact, I'm sure I'm not. But have you ever watched the eyes of another writer as they talk about their book? Have you wondered why someone purchases your book right at the book signing, or promises to get it online later? Or why others call you for advice in writing their own books?

It's because the best marketing tool you have, and one in which you will always have, is your voice. No matter where you are you can use this tool to talk about your book, answer questions about what you do for a living, share what you are working on next.

And all of this adds up to one thing.

More readership.

Like you, I want to get the word out, and I do it through book signings, social media, free book giveaway days and the like, but what I find truly fascinating is getting out there and talking about my book.

It doesn't cost me a cent. It's as free as the air. And yet, speaking about what I do opens the doors to many new readers.

Guest Post Marketing

One of the best ways I know of to market is to find blogs that are eager to post your guest post. It really isn't enough to write your own posts on your own blog, it's important to share your knowledge and experience with others outside your own world.

I usually write up guest posts that reflect on some aspect of marketing. But I have also created posts on writing and publishing. I have also shared some of my thoughts on the process of writing, and how life fits in to my writing career or the other way around.

A big thing that guest posting does is allow readers of the particular blog to follow you on your blog as well as locate your books. You may get some new readership on your own blog and maybe even some sales.

Though it is very difficult to track sales when it comes to guest blog writing, there are many things I have noticed when it has come to interest. You know you are moving forward when:

1. You get a few responses for your guest post and are able to connect with any or all of those who've responded to your guest post.

2. When your numbers on your own blog increase the day or the day following your guest blog post.

3. The person in charge of the blog in which you are guest writing, invites you to post something else because his/her readership has increased.

It's important to remember that whatever you do to promote your work will rank higher and lower on your search engine depending on the current interest of the readership on that particular blog. But that doesn't mean you should search out only highly read blogs.

4. Writing a guest post for any blog will open the doors to a trade. Why not ask the blog owner if he/she is interested in writing for your blog, enlarging your new friendship and increasing both of your readerships?

Guest post marketing is a little like playing in the ocean. You spend some time playing in the sand, collecting shells and cooling off in the water. Then you return home. The responses and other perks received from your guest blog are a little like the photos you look at from your visit to the ocean to remind you of your great time away.

Marketing When You Don't Want To

Marketing.

To be honest, right now I'm in a lull even though I need to be marketing my new release Sunny Side-Up to be released in September.

I don't know what it is, but sometimes, a very real breather is needed before I can tackle marketing with all of its management all over again.

Is a four month reprieve long enough to get back on my weary feet?

Going over my records I've been tapering off of marketing, sort of like the tapering off of watering my lawn even though burn spots are multiplying. But I almost can't help myself.

If you're a writer yourself, you probably understand.

Marketing is one of those things a writer must do, but that doesn't make it easy. Sometimes, we just wish that our book would market itself. But not even celebrities can do that. Someone must market in order for others to know the book exists.

Why does it have to be me?

Why should it be anyone but me?

Funny, I just realized I've been marketing the last few minutes and it wasn't hard at all. Sure, I've spent a few minutes writing out this blog post, but the journey has been fun and well worth the effort.

Like all marketing can be.

I wish you success in yours.

Positive Attitude Attracts Like Readers or How to Have a Successful Book Signing

The other day I heard this quote:

"I want to match what I'm going to meet."

I like it. And I agree with it. Not only because I believe those I connect with in life are living lives with similar goals to my own, but that people in general, who connect with me, may just decide they love what I write even if they haven't read any of my work yet.

How do I know this?

I have experienced the change that happens when the potential reader and I connect. It's like, suddenly, we've been friends for years.

Granted my positive attitude helps. I know that what I have to share is worthwhile and it reflects in what I say; what I share. My positive attitude shows not only in my voice; my tone, but in my presentation itself. I NEVER sit behind a table, hoping someone will walk up to me and begin a conversation. I stand in front of the table. I pass out postcards. I smile. I talk to people.

Sure, it may be that the person is broke, strapped for time, or simply doesn't want to try out a new book no matter how good the book looks, or how wonderfully you've connected with them, but be assured they will remember you, and when the time is right for them, they will buy your book.

Readers are just like you, with the same hangups, the same challenges, the same joys. If your attitude on the day of your next book signing is less than positive, expect that you will also meet like individuals who may not be intent on getting your next "positive"  Christian novel.

Remember, if you're more intent on "selling books," and less intent on "connecting with new readers" you may sell very little anyway, because people can sniff out snake oil salesmen from miles away.

Sure, your book has to be good, but it also have to fill a niche for your potential readers. That's why it's so important to be positive about your work, and to take the initiative to connect, rather than expecting others to do it for you.

If that means you need to change your attitude, you simply must do it.

Marketing Madness: Five More Ideas

If you missed yesterdays post, you'll want to read over the first five ideas I'm implementing this time around for marketing.

Here are the second five.

1. Offer your book for free. During its "grand opening" or "release," make sure you offer your readers an opportunity to get your eBook for free. Although you won't be making any money, be assured, if they like your book, the word will spread and others will purchase your book. My book offers last a minimum of three days through Amazon.

Along with your release, list your free book at sites such as Morgen Bailey's Writing Blog, Freebooksy and Frugal Freebies.

You may also decide to do a .99 cent promotion. Try: Bookbub, Gorilla and eBook Fairy Bargains.

2. Make sure you're scheduling interviews and guest posts wherever you can. Go back through your list of previously used sites, and contact the site owners again. See if they will help you with the release of your new book.

3. After your book is listed on Amazon make sure you get it listed online wherever you can. There are many sites that offer this service for free. Some starting places: Awesome Gang, BookGoodies, SPB Roundup, and World Lit Café.

4. Do some blog radio interviews. These are actually getting a bit harder to round up and I think its because radio reviewers are getting a bit more particular. Check out: Book Report Radio with Elaine.

5. Do some of your own book reviews. I have Fridays slotted for this, and when I don't have a book to review, I put in a guest post. Book reviews bring in readers to your blog, but you need to remember that you have to also read the book before you can review it, and this takes precious time. I usually don't have a book review posted more than once a month.

Need more ideas?

You'll want to get your hands on my book, Marketing Your Book on a Budget, if you haven't already.

I'm All for More Reviews!!

Getting sick of it yet?

All those reviews that keep coming your way?

You may be sick of me telling you about them, but I'm happy to report I'm at 25 for Marketing Your Book on a Budget! If you haven't read a single solitary one of my reviews yet, here's yet another plug to do so.

And if you haven't purchased my book yet, well...

That being said, I have learned some important stuff when it comes to improving my book for the 2014 version. Some have been baffled because my chapters are so short. Others have wondered where my marketing plan is in all of this fun information.

Can I be honest?

I really didn't have a marketing plan.

Now, before you click me off right here and now, allow me to explain. Marketing Your Book on a Budget came about as I tried new ideas and re-experienced old ones. I didn't have a marketing plan because I had no idea how to set one up. I read some stuff on how to do it, of course, but everything was so heavy I didn't want to begin.

So, during the course of getting my newest reviews the last week or so, I came to realize something. I now had a marketing plan! It was created through my experiences of the last 2 years and will be a part of Marketing Your Book on a Budget 2014.

Now, don't get scared. This marketing plan will be the simplest, least draining plan you will have ever seen. You will still have time to write and go out to eat and spend time with your family.

You want a hint?

Well, okay. Put book reviews at the top of your list. Follow book reviews with social networking.
I have seen the greatest personal success within these two areas alone.

Want more?

You'll just have to read the book.

The Authentic Writer

When it comes to marketing your book, you are also marketing yourself. It's not just about the book titles, it about your good name.

When you do events, pass out postcards, speak at a writer's group, you will be leaving behind a message. Not just a message of what you do, what you write, but a message of who you are.

I attended a writer's conference not so long ago and learned a lot about various writers. But I also learned a bit about perception and those thoughts one has when someone says something that just doesn't click with the heart.

The writer may make an excellent point, but somehow you feel that it is interlaced with ego or merely the desire to make lots of money.

Are you an authentic writer?
Photo by laynasaur, courtesy of Flickr
In these situations I try to be open minded, but I'm also cautious. The greatest desire I have as a writer is to be authentic, and to inspire other writers to be authentic.

It does little good (in my opinion) to consider publishing a trunk load of books if these books aren't well thought out, well planned and well executed. That means I know it's the next book I should be working on, that I have the wisdom to plan it out and the courage to write it authentically.

Marketing yourself is like going for that job interview and behaving in such a way that will impress your possible new boss. Sure, you want to wear the right thing, speak in a way that shows you know your stuff, ask questions, and be the sort of interviewee that the boss wants to hire. But in the midst of everything, if you forget to be you in favor of some mock job searcher just hoping to make a bit of extra money, you are missing the point, and possibly even the job.

The same is true for you as a writer. When you speak to a group, do a book signing, reach out with postcards or join in an event, realize that others are watching you. If you write inspiration, do you emanate inspiration? If you write children's books, can you connect with children as well as adults?

Whatever you write, are you more interested in others than in yourself and the sale of your books?

Writers should be positive and upbeat. Sure, there are struggles that must be shared that every writer faces, but in the end it should be about what a writer has to offer the world. In the end, the good news that you are who you say you are, is what every writer will remember most.

Free Book Marketing

The reviews keep coming! Thank you everyone!

Great Marketing Resource! June 27, 2013
"Anyone looking to market their book will benefit from this book. There are great practical ideas on how to market without breaking the bank. Kathryn E. Jones has done a wonderful job of collecting useful actions an author can do to market his/her book and presenting these ideas in a logical, easy to read, organized book! A must for the determined author! Thanks, Kathryn!"

"Marketing Your Book on a Budget is a useful guide for the first-time author wandering about lost in the wilderness of promotions. Even the pros will find the information beneficial.

A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO AFFORDABLE MARKETING, May 18, 2013
"This handy little market guide is a good investment for every writer who is new at marketing. The pages abound in doable plans presented in a format that is quick to read. Last year my 35th book was published so obviously I have some savvy when it comes to marketing. Still, Kathryn suggests a couple ideas that I hadn't thought of, but I intend to try soon.

When the author does her promised updates, I hope she will include posting reviews of the books one reads as a marketing tool. Those who read the reviews I've posted on Amazon know I am the author of SACKETS HARBOR POWDER MONKEY - THE WAR OF 1812 - a push for me and my most recent title. How's that for name recognition for me and my latest book?"

"These days, promotion is pretty much left up to the author, whether self-published or traditionally published, unless you're one of the big names. Jones provides us with some resources we can use right out of the gate, and most of them are free or low-cost opportunities. I first borrowed the book on Kindle, and then ordered it. I also gifted two copies to fellow authors. For the newbie who wonders 'Now what?' when it comes to promotion, this book is a life raft. Using the resources will save a lot of authors many sleepless nights. Help yourself to some peace of mind and order this book."

"Marketing Your Book on a Budget," by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones, is small but full of wonderful inexpensive and free ideas to market your book. Although I have taken many webinars and workshops and read many books, this one gave me some new ideas that will be easy to implement in my book marketing plan. I don't think we can ever learn enough about marketing because it is constantly changing with the advent of social media. Jones does, however, address traditional marketing as well as social media marketing.

Although I have already been using some of these marketing techniques, I gained valuable knowledge that will definitely help me in the future. Every author will find this small book worth reading.

"Kathryn's book is a treasure trove of information for writers who are ignorant about how to market their books after they are published. After reading this book, I realized that you don't have to spend a lot of money to publicize your work.
So, if you want to know how and where to contact reviewers for your book; participate in interviews to publicize your book; have your blog site or write on other's blogs; market your work on the social media; free advertising..... then you gotta have this book!
I enjoyed reading this book."

"Tiny book--big information for a beginner like me. Step by step, Kathryn Elizabeth Jones lays out plans to help an author get started. She gives the writer place after place where they can advertise their book for free. Free is good. She makes one realize how important it is to create a website and start to blog. This little gem is filled with ideas everyone who has written a book, or just thinking of writing a book can use. The greatest thing is, Jones makes the task ahead of the Author not seem so frightening or difficult as we first think."

Consider what YOU can do to market your book with little or no money!

In the process of updating this book, I neglected to add one resource I have personally used. If I'd remembered to place it, the information would have been included in the chapter, "Get Some Free Advertising."

AskDavid.com is a great site that promotes your book(s) for free, and puts you at the top of the list (you won't have to wait for your book's placement on the site behind other authors who beat you to the task) for only $10. I just sent in the information for my new book, above, and was able to include many links, including links to YouTube videos and a synopsis about my book. Your book cover is included on the site. In addition, AskDavid.com promotes your work to various social networking outlets, and you don't pay a dime!

When the 2014 update of Marketing Your Book on a Budget comes out next year, be prepared for additions like this one!

Happy marketing!

Soaring with Social Media

This past year has been an eye opener for me--for many reasons.

First, I've learned that marketing not only takes more time than writing a book, but I've learned what works for me in marketing and wasn't doesn't.

And since I'm all about sharing what I've learned about writing and all that surrounds it, I wanted to let you in on a little secret. I'm still learning, and I'm sure I have much more to learn that will come in 2013. For now, be assured of the following fact:

You will sell more books the more you put yourself out there. The best results I've had have come from two primary sources:

1. Getting out there both body and soul. The time I spent at the two Christmas craft shows showed me that I could not only sell a substantial amount of books but that people were usually curious to know what I did. I met some great people this past year who have not only helped to promote my books (on radio shows and blogs) but who have connected me with others interested in writing. This is great news! Fear never helps a writer succeed when they give in to it. And therein lies the clue. You will always be afraid to try new things, but if you don't let the fear win then you've won! In fact, fear is False Evidence Appearing Real, and in my mind as well as in the mind of the writer who wrote that statement, "Fear is not a gift of the spirit."

2. Using the free on Kindle day has made it possible to get my books out there. No, I don't make any money, but I really do make something if you consider those who get my book(s) for free, like them, and then talk to others about them. The numbers have soared on my book sales when I've offered them for free 1-3 days as part of my book's release, or as part of a special event such as Black Friday.

I have also shared my books on Pinterest, facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. What's important here is that I not only share, I want to be a part of the community and so I respond and connect with others. As for my website, the visitors this year have increased, and this is something I can monitor on my site. And I love the fact that I get responses on my blog almost every day; earlier this year that never happened. I have looked for ways to update my site and have replaced the free publishing ideas with  a couple of radio spots.

I have passed out some postcards this year; quite a lot of them, and really have no idea how well they've worked, though I can say for sure that I've received a couple of new clients by using them. Books signings in general haven't been very profitable for me, unless they've been coupled with the Christmas events as mentioned above. Sure I've sold books, but coupling what you do with what others do, draws in larger crowds; especially if the event is highly advertised.

What hasn't worked for me?

Doing too much social media in one day.

Suffice it to say, I feel good about the marketing efforts that I've put forth this year, but I haven't always been happy with how much time I've spent on the pursuit. Here's what you need to know:

Schedule your time. I was often burned out and a bit stressed because my time wasn't scheduled. A good way to balance your time is to devote much of it to writing, remembering that that's why you became a writer in the first place.

Soaring with social media is a bit like cooking up a cake. Most of the cake is the cake itself; only a portion of it is the frosting, but you usually need that sweet frosting to finish off the cake.

Marketing Your Book on a Budget

This is my last day of heavy book promotion for my new book, Scrambled, and I thank everyone for sticking with me. As a thank you I am offering my short Kindle book, "Marketing Your Book on a Budget," for .99 cents.

Yes, this is the standard price, and a really great one I might add. In it you'll find resources for getting book reviews, gaining interviews, getting free advertising and more. It's a short read with links to many of the places I've gone for book promotion and the many great people who have a desire to help budding as well as established authors for FREE.

Remember, much of what you do as an author to promote your work does not have to cost you a penny. Yes, it will cost you some time and some growing experience, but everything in Marketing Your Book on a Budget is either free or very low cost.

Because I am an author too, I realize that authors (as a general rule) need all the help they can get with the funds needed to promote their work, and I can't see paying for something that is generously given out by someone else because he/she cares about writers and their success.

Keep in mind that once you purchase this handy pamplet, you'll want to be on the list for future FREE YEARLY updates. Just follow the instructions at the end of the book.

I thank everyone who has and who continues to be generous with me!

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

Love,

Kathryn

New Pamplet on Book Marketing

Hello again,

With all of the hoopla with my new book Scrambled, I forgot
to mention that I have just published a handy pamplet entitled,
"Marketing Your book on a Budget."

How does an author best get book reviews? What of interviews, blogs and social media? How can a new author expect to be seen while crowding the lane with other authors of his/her genre?

Marketing Your Book on a Budget is tiny for a reason; any author can afford it. But be prepared for the endless information enclosed. You'll never wonder again about the best ways to speak up about your book, get free advertising, or learn why postcards can help you get the word out faster and easier than any other way.

Plus, once you have downloaded the Kindle version, expect yearly updates for FREE. Just contact us to register via the email at the end of the book. Never be in the dark again when it comes to marketing your book. See what little or no money will really attract!
